Teaching philosophy

I aspire to be the kind of teacher who engages my students in meaningful learning activities, promotes collaboration, and supports the creative and imagination of students in a safe, secure, and fun environment. As a teacher, I am committed to meeting the unique needs of each of my students to ensure they become confident, knowledgeable, and independent members of society.

When taking in to account my philosophy I will use technology to supplement and enhance my teaching for all students. I will use technology in a manner that is engaging and allows them to actively participate. Technology will be incorporated in my classroom to enhance the learning of students in the following ways, increase their knowledge of communities outside Sitka, bring experts virtually into the classroom, and demonstrate the different ways technology can be used.

In my everyday classroom I will use technology in the following ways
-      Promethean board- This technology will be used for class attendance, interactive lessons, reading and math lessons, and brain breaks.
-      Reading A-Z- This subscription based website focuses on 1stgraders reading skills, it offers differentiated lessons for all skill levels, leveled readers, fluency passages, phonics lessons, and vocabulary lessons.
-      Class Dogo- connects teachers with students and parents to build amazing classroom communities by creating a positive culture, give students a voice, and share moments with parents. Teachers can award students points of Dogo’s to encourage a classroom community
-      Remind- this app connects parents and teachers and serves as a secure method of communication through texts and two way messaging. Teachers can text reminders to parents about field trips or upcoming changes to a schedule and brings parents into the classroom.

Question
How can I use technology to ensure my students become confident, knowledgeable, and independent members of society?

Answer

I believe that far too often technology is used in a manner that prevents social interactions. I want to create a sense in my students that technology is more than sitting staring at your phone. I want my students to see technology as something that enhances their learning an promotes collaboration and interactions with their classmates.

  1. Hi Erika! First off let me say, I am so jealous that Sitka has a childcare center! I have three littles of my own and would have loved to give them the opportunities you are providing!

My oldest son is now a 1st grader and his teacher started using Remind last year and is using Class Dojo this year. From the parent perspective, I absolutely love Class Dojo. Even though my husband and I are both teachers and have extra connections, it has still been wonderful to see how our son is doing during day-to-day activities in the classroom. It sounds like you have a solid plan and are running an awesome facility!

  2. Erika—your question and answer align perfectly with my research goals. We need more students to understand the true value of technology outside of being able to use social media, play games, and text with friends. But I love how the goal is to make students confident, knowledgeable, and independent members of society *with* technology. That is my goal with ePortfolio!
